As many as 1.4 million people in the United States identify as transgender — double what previous studies had estimated.
Young adults (ages 18-24) were more likely than any other age group to identify as transgender. The states and districts with the highest numbers of trans people are Washington, D.C., Hawaii, California and New Mexico. The Williams Institute’s report has more information.
